Natural instinct is a specialty raw pet food business based in Mississauga, Ontario dedicated to supplying the general public with a biologically appropriate food for dogs and other pets and supporting the local farmers.

As opportunistic and predatory animals, dogs and cats have evolved to survive on carrion and whole carcass type of food.  It has been said that dogs and cats are now domesticated and have been conditioned to survive on processed commercial food, but in reality more and more dogs and cats are suffering and dying every year due to countless number of diseases and genetic disorders caused by poor nutrition, and this has been a never ending cycle of income for those who are involved in the manufacturing of commercial dog food and veterinarians.

Through millions of years of evolution dogs and cats have evolved as raw feeding carnivores but kibbles were invented during the war as an emergency food item, and since our pets digestion has not evolved to digest this type of man made food, it places a lot of stress on the organs to process a type of food that has been preserved to last for up to a year. This process creates a very acidic environments in there bodies and over time causes organ failure and suppresses the immune system which increases disease susceptibility, cancer and genetic disorders in there offspring. The increasing number of disorders and deaths in our pets are mainly due to a lack of a biologically appropriate food as predation and starvation are very rare in today's modern society. However in developing countries, dogs that feed on human food waste and prey animals are known to live more than 17 years and the mortality rate is mainly determined by physical injuries rather than cancer or genetic deficiencies.

The benefits of a raw meaty diet are amazing and it has cured all kinds of digestive disorders, allergies, and even disease prevention, however it has been ignored and misunderstood in many ways. Raw food is rich in beneficial bacteria, enzymes and certain nutrients that are destroyed if it's changed from its natural form. Due to a carnivores' short digestive track, they require food that can be digested and absorbed quickly. Real dog food will start degrading at room temperature within a few hours but the same cannot be said about cooked or processed food.

There are many types of commercially prepared raw food available in the market and the demand is gradually increasing over the years as more and more people see the health benefits in there pets after feeding raw.  Others have tried preparing their own raw mix but a lot of times this has caused problems as the concept of raw feeding is not as simple as offering a piece of steak or ground meat. First of all many dogs do not do well on ground meat or pure muscle meat. This is not a balance food and in many cases will cause diarrhea. The key ingredients of a proper raw feeding starting from the order of most important are: green tripe, organs, bones and muscle meat (crushed leafy greens or grass should also be mixed in the food from time to time). Most people would now ask how much of each ingredient should be used in each meal. The answer to this question is that not every meal needs to be 100% nutritionally complete and in nature it is impossible for an animal to eat a nutritionally complete food every day. Variety is the key and over feeding of certain food items such as liver, heart, large amounts of pure meat and excess bones should be avoided. However green tripe which is the best and most affordable food for dogs can be feed on its own as a stable food. One way to provide the perfect balance of the above ingredient is to feed a whole carcass type of food such as a whole chicken, quail, rabbit, fish and etc. Individual needs of each dog or cat is different and depends on various factors but the concept is the same.
